Auditions
Do I Need to Audition?
Auditions are required for all musicians wishing to join an OYS ensemble for the first time and for those wishing to move from Philharmonia to Symphony Orchestra. Auditions are NOT required for existing members returning to their current ensemble. In-person auditions are typically held in the spring, after the concert season has ended, and in the early fall prior to the start of the next season. Other audition times may be scheduled during summer on an as-needed basis. Please see the Events page for listings of upcoming auditions.
If you would like to audition but can't make a scheduled time, contact us! Our goal is to open this opportunity to as many young musicians as possible.
The Audition Process
- Download and fill out the form below.
- Complete the form and return by email to [email protected]. Indicate in the email whether you plan to audition in person or virtually.
- If auditioning in-person, you will receive an email response with a link to the online form where you can sign up for an audition slot. Further information on the in-person audition can be found on the application form. When you arrive for auditions, locate the sign-in table where someone will direct you and answer questions.
- Prepare for your audition according to the instrument-specific requirements found later on this page.
- If you choose to audition virtually, record a video of the musician performing each required aspect of the audition for that instrument. Please show the entire instrument in your audition video. For string players, you need to show your bow hold and left hand/instrument hand in the video submissions. Submit your video by email to [email protected].
- You will be contacted by OYS with audition results once all auditions are completed for that period. Please be patient, as it is a busy time of year for the conductors and everyone involved.
